This bookshelf was a disappointment. Although the sides and top and shelves are sturdy, the back is a series of three (plywood?) panels that are so thin they splinter. (Think about those little airplanes you used to put together as a kid, and you've got the right idea.)
The back panels have to be put together with plastic connectors and slide into thin slats in the top, bottom and sides of the unit. Because these back panels are so thin, they warp and buckle, which makes it nearly impossible to put together (when you get one side in, the other side pops out). Even after getting all of the screws and wood dowels in, the pieces are not cut well enough to fit and pop out. Frustrating. Seriously, a folded piece of heavy cardboard with wood-colored contact paper would have worked better.
That said, it looks well enough once things are put in it, and it is a great size. It's too soon to say how it will hold up, since we just put it together today. On the whole, though, I'd have to recommend paying slightly more and getting something that is built better.

IF I COULD HAVE SENT IT BACK, I WOULD. IT TOOK THREE HOURS TO ASSEMBLE AND WE HAD TO ADD EXTRA SCREWS TO ENSURE OVERALL STABILITY THAT DETRACT FROM ITS APPEARANCE.
