I tried other gates for my stairs for the small dog we have. They were either too flimsy and not wide enough. I was able to adapt this gate with filler wood that just happened to match for the 46" stairway.

The product is installed in a doorway at the top of two steps. The doorway is between the kitchen where the dog stays at night and when no one is home. The small opening allows the cats to have free use of the house including the kitchen.
The doors of this old house are narrow so many similar products do not fit the opening. This product can be configured to a narrow (less than 30") opening.
In a funny wrinkle, our very tall and slender dog somehow squeezed through the "small dog" opening when we first installed the gate. We have since closed the gate partially so the cats can still get through but the dog can no longer squeeze through.

We love that this gate was a decorative addition to our home as well as very useful. We enjoy being able to have the door open at times when the dogs are allowed in all areas of the house.
The lower height makes this gate much easier for us to step over without fear of it being so low that our dogs might jump over it.
Also appreciated is that the assembly is very minor, just a few screws and it is ready to use..Thank you!
