Christmas Tree Storage and Accessories Quick Tips
Taking care of an artificial tree starts at set-up and continues with disassembly and storage. Follow these suggestions and you’ll get the most out of your tree:
1. Assemble the tree in or near the area where you plan to display it. When working with a pre-lit tree, test all of the bulbs and replace any defective ones immediately. This will keep the working lights from overloading which could lead to damage of the entire light string over time.
2. If your full-sized tree didn’t come with a sturdy metal stand, consider getting one. A quality stand can mean the difference between a steady tree and an easy-tipper that leads to broken ornaments, damaged tree branches and a forlorn dog spending Christmas in the doghouse. Welded steel stands are particularly important for larger, heavier trees.
3. When it comes time to take the tree down, first, carefully dust it using the upholstery brush attachment of a vacuum or a clean, lint-free cloth. Then reverse the “fluffing” process that you went through when setting it up to ensure maximum protection for branches and needles.
4. Pick a cool, dry place for storage and always, always store the tree in a heavy-duty box or a tree storage bag. If the tree’s original box is in excellent condition and can be closed tightly, it offers an economical storage option. The Christmas tree bag is the other way to go and a good bag is generally the most effective way to seal out dust, light, bugs and any other critters.
5. Extra care should be taken with white or flocked trees which can discolor if left in hot or humid conditions, especially if enclosed in cardboard. Don’t let your white Christmas turn to orange – keep any moisture to a minimum and the temperature under 90°.
