The age of the players, the size of the field or pitch, and the location of the game are just some of the factors you’ll need to consider when choosing a soccer goal size. The official international rule comes from FIFA’s Laws of the Game (FIFA, or Fédération Internationale de Football Association, is soccer’s international governing body), which state that a goal should measure 8 feet high from ground to crossbar, and 24 feet wide from post to post.
For easy reference, here are some recommended goal and field dimensions by age group. In youth soccer, ages are listed as U and then age, with the U standing for “under.” The US Youth Soccer organization recommends goals measuring 18W by 6H feet or smaller for players aged eight and under, but the dimensions below are more common for young players.

A typical U8 goal size is 12W by 6H feet. For U6, most goals measure about 6W by 4H feet. The standard dimensions for high school soccer goals are 24W by 8H feet—the same as the FIFA international standard. The NCAA’s college soccer rules also require an international adult-size goal.
- Aluminum: Though costlier than other options, aluminum soccer goals are the best choice for durable outdoor performance. Aluminum is both strong and relatively lightweight, but most importantly, it’s naturally rust-proof, and should provide low-maintenance reliability for years to come. Most aluminum goals are large, in-ground designs measuring between six and eight feet in height—a good choice for official games or league play.
- Steel: Steel is the most common soccer goal material. It’s most often used on rebounders and small portable goals measuring four to six feet in height. A good value for its price, heavy-duty galvanized steel is recommended for backyard play or practice.
- PVC: For lightweight portability at a low cost, PVC is your best option. Great for backyard play, practice, or youth soccer, PVC goals offer quick and easy assembly. Because PVC is lighter than metal, we recommend using stakes or anchors for added stability.
- Fiberglass: Fiberglass offers unique benefits for portable play, including popup soccer goals and Bownet’s steel and fiberglass designs, which provide the fastest set-up time of any full-size portable goal—about two minutes with two people.
Soccer nets are measured in four dimensions:
- H for height
- W for width
- D for top depth
- B for bottom depth
Some soccer nets may list zero as a dimension. If you’re finding that confusing, here’s how it works:
0D and #B: These nets angle down from the top crossbar at about a 45-degree angle. The top depth is thus 0D, but the bottom depth will have a measurement such as 6B, or six feet in depth.
#D and #B: If D and B are different numbers, the net is for a goal in which the net goes straight back from the crossbar—say 4.5 feet for 4.5D—and then angles down and back to the B measurement. If D and B are the same number, the net is for professional-style box goals where the frame goes straight back and then drops at a 90-degree angle to the bottom.
0D and 0B: These portable nets hang from the crossbar at about a 45-degree angle, and are attached with a ground bar or stakes.
One other measurement you should know is the gauge of your soccer net, which is the measure of its mesh thickness. Professional-quality nets have a 5mm gauge of durable polyethylene. A standard gauge is 2.5mm or 3mm.
