How to Hang a Mirror

If you have a mirror that needs to hang and you've determined where you want it to go, don't be intimidated. Gather the necessary hanging hardware and tools and get ready to hang your beautiful mirror. Having a pencil with an eraser will help you lightly mark the area where you want the mirror hung and you can easily erase the marks after.

1. Figure out whether or not you need a helper – heavy mirrors can be difficult to maneuver. A friend can also hold the mirror in different locations so you can take a step back or take a picture to see if you like the spot. Use a tape measure if you need to. This can help, especially with larger mirrors, and ensure the mirror placement is evenly spaced.

2. Your pencil marks should also match up with the hanging brackets on the back of the mirror. Make sure they're level and even. You can use masking tape as an easy way to measure the distance if you don't have measuring tape.

3. What type of wall do you have – drywall, plaster or masonry? Finding the stud can be tricky, so using a stud finder will help. Mark the center of the stud with your pencil. If you're not in line with a stud, use a wall anchor before attaching the hardware. This is especially important when hanging heavy mirrors.

4. Once you determine the correct spot, use your hammer, drill, or screwdriver to drive in the hanging hardware. Wall mirrors already have strong frames and often have hardware attached (wire, D-rings, hooks). However the mirror hangs, make sure you hold it flush with the wall and gently lower the brackets onto the screws. Do not let go until you're sure it's secure.

Step back and admire your work! When you feel brave again, you can tackle a mirror gallery wall in another room for a real showpiece.
