How To Choose the Right Kids' Desk

Learning to study is a life skill, and nothing helps more than a well-designed desk to start your child off on the right foot. There are all types of desks for children of any age, from kids computer desks to kids writing desks, some with coordinating hutches and bookshelves. To help you select a desk for your child, keep in mind the following questions and answers.

What's the difference between a child's desk and an adult's desk?

A child's desk is properly proportioned for their age, just like an adult desk is sized to comfortably fit a grown-up's body. That means children's desks will be shorter in height and width. Kids' desks are also shallower so little arms can reach across easily.

Adult desks are typically constructed of wood, metal, glass, or laminated particleboard, but kids' desks are usually made with fun colors and shapes in mind. You'll find durable plastic or painted wood desks in an array of vivid hues that will encourage activities or to complete nightly homework!

How big should kids desks be for various ages?

Though it does depend on how tall your child stands, here's a rough estimate of how tall a desk should be from toddler to teen:

  • Toddler: Consider selecting a desk with a surface that's maximum 19 in. tall.
  • 4 to 5 years old: Select a desk that's between 20 to 23 in. tall. You'll find models in durable, washable plastic, some with a built-in working desk light.
  • 6 to 7 years old: Choose a surface that's between 24 and 25 in, tall.
  • 8 to 11 years old: A desk that's 26 inches will be fine for younger elementary age kids. A desk that's closer to adult height will suffice for a pre-teen and teen student.

When purchasing a desk chair for your child, make sure his or her knees are comfortably bent at a 90-degree angle and feet are flat on the floor. Make certain there's plenty of room between the tops of your child's thighs and bottom of the desk's surface when in a seated position.

What organization features should I look for on a kid's desk?

Kids desks have plenty of space to help your kids stay organized and on top of all their assignments! No need to use the old dog-ate-the-homework excuse with these popular features below:

  • Hutches: Sometimes hutches are built in, often with cubby spaces or slots. They're also available as options that you can choose to add onto the desk or remove later — almost like a coordinating set. Hutches may be closed with doors, or they may have open shelving that easily holds books or a computer printer.
  • Middle drawer: These are found on most desks. They're not usually deep, so they're great for storing pencils, markers, and other small supplies.
  • Cork board: Usually found on hutches, cork boards can protect desk surfaces and may also function as a bulletin board.
  • Side storage pockets: Often found on toddler desks, these large storage compartments can fit bulkier items like toys, books, and craft supplies.

Consider a corner desk to make the most of your child's space. Just like an adult corner unit, a child's corner desk turns an unused part of a room into a study space. These somewhat-triangular desks' tops are often deeper than other desks for kids, which increases desktop storage space.

Sitting down to a productive homework session or an afternoon of creative coloring is so much easier — and even more fun — with the right desk. Keep your child's size in mind and consider the helpful features that your little one will use, and it'll be a breeze to discover a stylish, functional kids' desk that harmonizes with your home.
