Choosing Beds for a Good Night's Sleep

The bed is one of the most important pieces of furniture in any home. People spend up to a third of each day in bed, which makes it important for you to have one that you find comfortable. With all of the different types and sizes of beds available these days it can be difficult to choose a bed that's right for you--so we're here with some tips to help you narrow down your options and get a good night's sleep.

What size beds are available?

Bed sizes are standardized, so you can easily match a bed frame with a mattress and sheets once you've figured out which one you like. The four most common bed size dimensions are:

  • Twin: Measures 39 in. by 75 in.
  • Full/Double: Measures 54 in. by 75 in.Beautiful outdoor performance
  • Queen: Measures 60 in. by 80 in.
  • King: Measures 76 in. by 80 in.
  • California King: Measures 72 in. by 84 in.

What type of bed can I choose?

Beds come in a wide variety of types and styles, so before you select a material you prefer, consider the shape and design of the bed. Common bed types include the following:

  • Platform beds consist of raised platforms onto which you set your mattress, and you typically don't use a box spring with these beds. Slats extend across the platform to hold your mattress and provide air circulation. The platform may sit atop legs, or it may extend all the way to the floor. Platform beds often have headboards and may or may not have footboards. Some platform bases contain drawers that can be ideal for clothing or linen storage in rooms that don't have space for dressers.
  • Canopy beds and poster beds have tall posts extending up from each corner of the bed's frame. They're great in a traditional space, but they also create a lot of visual impact thanks to their stately posts. Canopy beds take the drama a step further and may have fabric draped from their posts or from frames that run between the posts. You have the option to hang fabric from them or leave them bare to expose their decorative details.
  • Sleigh beds have gently swooping curves and are shaped like the old-time sleighs that give them their name. These beds often have both headboards and footboards, and the curves tend to make the frames longer than those on other beds. Sleigh beds have a decidedly traditional look, and they're often available in rich wood with carved embellishments.
  • Panel beds are likely what you think of when you envision a traditional bed frame, and usually have side rails which allow for a box spring and a mattress. These frames have headboards and sometimes matching footboards. The headboards and footboards may or may not have actual decorative panels on them — sometimes, the head and foot sections simply match each other to give the bed a cohesive look.
  • Murphy beds are unique in that they fold up against a wall or into a specially designed bed cabinet that may resemble an armoire or entertainment center. These beds have springs and are hinged along the back bottom edge to easily pull down and retract back up. They're especially convenient in multipurpose rooms, such as a space in your home that might double as an office and a guest bedroom.

The right bed is a bed that feels good to you and gives you enough space to feel comfortable. Whatever the size of your bedroom, you can easily find a bed that fits the look of your home and has the style you love.
