Q: How many logs at a time?

A: The bowl diameter is 17.25 " diameter. There is no way to determine an actual count. The burn area should not be overloaded.
Q: I'll put a screen on the front to protect from embers and I'll set it on bricks in case the bottom gets too hot. Would this make it safe to use in a shed?

A: I'm not sure. I think it would get very Smokey if used in a shed. It would need to be vented.
