Q: I just got this bookcase and the chemical fumes are so bad that I am having asthma attacks and a sore throat. I live in an apartment, so airing it outdoors or in a garage isn't possible. I have all the wondows open but the fumes are not going away. How long does it take for the furniture fumes to dissipate?

A: Your furniture is outgassing all the chemicals that are used to process the wood and build it. Several substances are good for absorbing odors...activated charcoal, kitty litter, baking soda. You might try putting disposable aluminum trays filled with one of those on the shelves and leaving them for a few days to see if the situation improves. If you think it's that bad, I'd recommend you return it.If you would like to return the bookcase, please visit our returns center at www.hayneedle.com or call us at 1-888-880-4884 and a representative will be happy to assist you.
