About Jewels of Java

Karel Simeon, president and founder of Jewels of Java, came to America in 1989 and quickly realized he could share some of the best of his homeland?Indonesian island Java?with his new land. Karel began importing a variety of clothing and gifts, but soon expanded to include casual furniture. He opened a teak manufacturing plant in his hometown village, providing jobs to displaced farmers there and showcasing the master craftsmen of the area. Now Jewels of Java specializes in casual outdoor furniture crafted with quality plantation-grown teak and sling seating. The company's New York facility also produces made-to-order Sunbrella fabric cushions filled with quick-dry foam.

Assembly & Care

Teak is a hardwood of choice for durable outdoor furniture. It requires little or no care and will last for many years. Initially, teak is a golden brown color. This color is derived from the natural oils in the wood. Exposure to the sun will naturally dry the oils and change the color to a silvery gray. This process can take 6 to 12 months, depending on the amount of exposure to the elements. As the weathering process occurs, you may notice small cracks (often called "checking" in the furniture), and the grain may rise slightly. This is normal and in no way affects the stability and integrity of the wood. The only maintenance your furniture requires is a periodic cleaning with a soft bristle brush and mild detergent (laundry detergent and water) work well. There are commercially available teak protectors and teak oils. Jewels of Java does not recommend any particular brands and does not warranty the use of these products. Use them at your discretion. Jewels of Java does not recommend Teak Oil for outdoors use. It significantly increases the maintenance of your furniture.
