Q: Can it be built without the support pieces going across as for an example one long rectangular box?

A: Limited help, I'm afraid. From experience with other raised beds built with lumber, the soil pushes out on the sides and causes them to bow outwards, even with stakes. My composite support pieces were every 4ft; the middle one on the upper level and the other two on on the lower level. With soil, this gave the look of two 4ft x 8ft boxes. It has worked very well for this past growing season; considering getting another one.

A: No, those are required to keep the beds from bowing out due to the weight of the soil and plants.
