So how do I do start a rowing regime?

The beauty of rowing as an exercise is that it requires minimal athleticism and only the most basic levels of coordination. Here are the basics:

• Sit at the rowing machine with your back upright, arms extended, shoulders down, knees bent, and feet securely strapped into the panels. You'll be using the balls of your feet to do most of the work, so remember to keep your knees and ankles flexed.

• Hold the oar with a light, relaxed grip. About 80 percent of your power when rowing should come from your lower body and core, so there's no need to hang on for dear life. Place your hands toward the outside of the oar and let your pinky fingers gently float off the end, with thumbs resting on top rather than wrapped underneath.

• Push through the balls of your feet until your legs are straight. Once they are, hinge at your hips and lean back about 45 degrees, pulling the oar toward your torso. The oar should end up just below your chest—near the top of your ribs, or where the band of a sports bra ends.

• To finish the move, straighten the arms back out, hinge forward at the hips until your torso is slightly over your legs, and bend the knees until you're back in the starting position. That's all there is to it! Try rowing at a consistent pace for a set amount of time, or set a goal by distance.
