This year, I’m looking forward to the holidays more than ever before. Not only is my daughter, Maggie, at such a fun age, but we’re also excited to welcome our second bundle of joy this winter. Needless to say, there will be lots of celebrating and cozying up inside the Meyers’ house this season!
A Welcoming Family Space
Because many relatives are booking flights to New York to celebrate the holidays with us — and because we’ll start many new family traditions together — there couldn’t be a better time for us to bring in a few new functional living room furniture pieces and festive Christmas decorations that will last all the years to come. When it came to decorating, I needed to be cognizant of the fact that there would be two little ones learning to walk and explore, and luckily I didn’t have to sacrifice my personal style or contemporary aesthetic to achieve the perfect look in our small space. Here’s how I did it.
Creating a neutral-toned and Zen-like vibe in the family room is important to me, as I want everyone who comes to our home to have a cozy retreat away from their everyday busy lives. So, I anchored the room with a soft, plush rug to soften up the space, and its light cream shade automatically made the room feel bigger. In lieu of a traditional coffee table, a large brown leather ottoman made for a perfect focal point. It not only offers soft corners for the little ones but also looks chic when my husband, Dave, and I host friends on the weekend. Plus — bonus! — I get very excited when furniture doubles as storage to save space in our loft apartment. I knew a tray would be the perfect accessory on top of the ottoman for balancing drinks, books, and other décor items.
To instantly give any table or tray a festive holiday twist, fill a solid white pitcher with monochromatic flowers and place it alongside a footed bowl overflowing with tasty red sugared cranberries.
Thoughtful Holiday Decor
To say we had minimal holiday décor is an understatement. We knew it was time to get a Christmas tree that could be reused each year and easily fit in storage. Though we love a fresh pine scent, real trees make for a lot of cleanup when toddlers pull on branches. Plus, seeing as we have an apartment instead of a house, we found an incredible “skinny” tree with glowing white lights that seamlessly fits in our favorite corner of the room. When decorating a tree, I stick to two or three hues that pop against evergreen. The silver icicle-inspired ornaments and woodland creatures provided loads of texture, and for a fun dash of glitz, I added a few glitter ornaments in bright shades of gold.
I was beyond excited to pick up our newly monogrammed stockings and can’t wait to watch Maggie dig in on Christmas morning. Because we don’t have a chimney or a fireplace, we’re proudly displaying the stockings on our wooden media center next to the TV so we can stash any small treasures we pick up throughout the holiday season right inside.
Classic Statement Pieces
I’ve been hunting for a new couch for months and knew I found “the one” when I saw this sleek, contemporary design. I settled on a shade of light grey to mask accidental spills and stay in line with the room’s neutral color palette. In the chilly months ahead, cable-knit and fuzzy pillows automatically set a cozy ambiance that begs for everyone to cuddle up under a blanket on the couch. With a love for all things industrial, I couldn’t resist bringing in a new white accent chair, copper vases filled with bright red berries for a holiday twist, and a metal-meets-wood end table that I softened up with a unique rope-inspired nautical lamp.
Whether you want to make small or big changes to your room, adding a few pops of color with oversized blankets is an easy (and budget-friendly!) way to quickly give your space an instant holiday makeover. Fill wicker baskets with bright red, white, or green options for family members to cuddle up with while enjoying a cup of hot chocolate, and don’t be shy about piling up pillows in various patterns, textures, shapes, and sizes until you find the perfect look you’ll love throughout the entire holiday season.
