Based out of Washington D.C., interior designer Molly Kay is one of our Instagram favorites. Her casual, yet elegant style is the perfect combination of coastal and glam (and it’s family friendly, too). We reached out to Molly with a few burning questions and were delighted she so graciously opened her home to us.
What about home and interior spaces inspired you to become a designer?
For as long as I can remember, I was always taking accessories and pillows in my childhood home and moving them around to another spot. As I got a little older, I would re-arrange my room all the time and redecorate it. Interior design is just something I have always had an obsession with, so it was natural for me to become a designer.
How does your home reflect your lifestyle?
We spend a lot of time together as a family. Our home has a very open concept, so there is plenty of space for everyone and we can all be together. I didn’t want our home to be divided into rooms that separated everyone. We have open space as well because my family loves sports and someone is always dribbling a basketball or kicking a soccer ball! I didn’t fill up every space with furniture and décor on purpose.
How do you make the same color palette work from room to room?
My home has the challenge of being extreme open concept. We love it and designed it this way, but the challenge lies in making our décor work everywhere even though each space has a different purpose. I picked a main color – crisp white walls – and then accent colors to complement each other, working from one room to the next.
Any advice for readers interested in trying out wallpaper (including removable styles)?
My advice is to always go for it! I am obsessed with wallpaper and have it in seven areas of my home (I am not done yet)! It’s a beautiful way to express your creativity, and if you use temporary paper, it’s not as much of a commitment. Mine is the real deal, but if you are a little scared of bold patterns or colors, there are plenty of neutral options that would still be a great focal point for any space. I always recommend wallpaper to my clients.
Do you have a favorite room or piece of furniture?
My kitchen is definitely a favorite! As far as furniture goes, I love my woven loom dining chairs. They fit the space so well, are comfortable, and achieve just the look I wanted.
Where do you suggest readers begin when decorating on a budget?
Begin with the largest piece you need to buy, as that is usually your largest investment. Spend your money on the pieces that will get the most use, such as sofas and chairs. Smaller pieces are items to save money on.
Are you working on any current projects?
We are currently building two houses right now for clients. My husband is a general contractor who builds customs homes and does remodeling. Although I have a lot of design projects that don’t involve my husband, I love the projects we work on together! I’m excited to show these projects off.
