We might be biased, but we love the stylists at our photo studio. Not only do they create beautiful, inspiring spaces for our photography, they also played a vital role in the launch of our new product line MoDRN. We caught up with Val, Missy, Susan, Kaitlyn, Amanda, and MacKenzie to find out what they like most about MoDRN and working on the set.
What was your inspiration for the MoDRN photo shoot?
Each of the individual collections were the starting point of inspiration. For example, how would our customer integrate the Retro Glam trend into their home, versus Refined Industrial or Scandinavian Minimal. Once we had a clear point of view for each trend, we determined specific set details, such as architectural elements, wall coverings, floor surfaces, lighting, angles, props, etc.
– Val Drorbaugh, Style Manager
Which of the three collections is your favorite?
The Scandinavian Minimal collection was one of my favorites to work with. The muted colors and clean lines of the furniture allowed the space to breathe and take on a life of its own. Many of the pieces from this collection are easily paired with other trends to create an eclectic vibe.
– Missy Magnuson, Sr. Photo Stylist
The collection I love is Refined Industrial. I love the mix of textures, such as faux leather and metal. I love that it is a neutral-based trend with some subtle pops of greens and blues.
– MacKenzie Boner, Jr. Photo Stylist
What set did you enjoy working on the most?
The Refined Industrial living room is a stand-out for me. The set design was based on a multi-level concept I had been wanting to create. Seeing that design come to life with the unique combination of products, mix of textures through textiles and prints, lighting, and final styling details exceeded even my expectations. The final images are soooo good.
The most enjoyable trend for me to style was Scandinavian Minimal. The neutral colors and simplicity of these products fit my personal style, which made setting up these rooms the most satisfying. Also, the color palate and minimalism of the décor pieces make these products interchangeable and easy to coordinate within most homes.
– Amanda Fish, Jr. Photo Stylist
What colors or materials tie MoDRN together?
I love the use of neutrals like grey, white, navy, and black across all trends, but especially love that each trend has its own pop of color, including the raspberry velvet in Retro Glam, tan leather in Refined Industrial, and soft green dinnerware in Scandinavian Minimal.
– Susan Graeve, Photo Stylist
Across all MoDRN trends you will find predominately neutral tones and varying shades of blue. Materials are pretty collection specific, such as faux leather in Refined Industrial and brass in Retro Glam. However, you will find knit and woven fabrics within them all.
My favorite piece in the MoDRN collection is the Sandpiper Upholstered Lounge Chair. The shape of the chair is amazing, and I love all of the colors it comes in, especially the Merlot Red. When styling, the Soren Metal Side Tables worked well in every room. The simplicity of the side table makes it a chameleon in each trend.
I love the sofas! The colors, size, and shape of all the sofas across each trend is simple yet modern and can be incorporated into any size room or décor with ease.
Any suggestions for mixing trends?
The amazing thing about the MoDRN line is how each product works not only cohesively, but also mixed-and-matched with items already living in your home. Several core pieces offer timeless details of clean lines and luxe materials. The neutrals from Scandinavian Minimal and Refined Industrial pair beautifully with the color pops in Retro Glam. I’m a huge fan of the sleek modernity in the Scandinavian artwork and think it works perfectly with any style to immediately elevate a space.

What’s the best thing about styling for Hayneedle?
I love that no day on set is the same! We curate spaces for a large range of styles, and every experience brings about new ways to problem solve and deliver the best imagery possible. I am always excited to be part of new brand launches like MoDRN. It is an incredible feeling to be part of a team that gets to tell the story of a product.
