With two kids who are constantly on the move, I realized my family was outgrowing our space and it was time to make a change! We decided to combine our master bedroom and home office in order to most effectively use each room. For those living in big, urban cities who are forced to use their space very wisely or those who are trying to optimize square footage, here are a few simple ideas to create a combined bedroom and home office.
Pick a Palette
Select an overall theme or color palette that you want to both sleep and work in. Decide if bold and vibrant hues are right for you or if surrounding yourself with moody hues is more up your alley. For us, a calming “retreat” was a no-brainer so I chose white as the base and added in unique accents like pillows in shades of coral and blue, as well as my favorite finishing nautical touch – the Liora Manne Double Knot pillow. We gave our bed a beach-vibe by anchoring it with a tan tufted wingback headboard (as simple nod to sandy beaches!) and added light blue and white striped nautical sheets with a crisp white comforter that can be used year-round and is reminiscent of the sea.
Use Space Wisely
Let your creativity run wild when it comes to storage! Now is the time to install wall shelves you’ve been dreaming about or purchase furniture like our desk that comes with extra storage. When floor square footage is minimal, remember to “build up” on the wall instead with shelves, desk hutches, or shadow boxes.
Bring in Natural Elements
Adding flowers, plants or leaves are a surefire way to add an organic feel and pops of color to a room. I picked up tropical leaves from the flower district and displayed them in a green glass vase. Not only do indoor plants fill empty space, they also increase oxygen levels and have been shown to decrease fatigue and headaches!
Accessories are the perfect finishing touch for a room, but make sure you round it out only with items that you truly love! I displayed blue Cloche Bottles on top of our desk and they’re the perfect contrast to the snakeskin tray and white Enna jewelry box. The Hadley Book Boxes double as décor and hidden storage! And, perhaps my favorite pieces in the room overall are the coral framed prints above our bed which adds instant drama to the room!
