Meet Val, Hayneedle’s longtime style manager. We sat down with Val to dish about her design inspiration …
Tell us a bit about your background, and how you came to be Hayneedle’s Style Manager/Stylist.
I’ve been passionate about design and decorating for as long as I can remember. When I first started out in photography, I quickly learned that art direction and the production design of the set were just as important to me. I was fortunate to begin my career as the studio coordinator for a commercial photo studio, which led me to work in most aspects of the field. My love for design and background in photography provides the perfect foundation for my role as the style manager for Hayneedle.
What are your style & design influences?
My style is forever changing and evolving, for sure. I really love ethnic-influenced pieces as well as mid-century modern. I love a mix, both in style as well as textures. I definitely have a passion for whites and neutrals, and although I like things somewhat simplified and minimal, I continually make choices that have a bohemian spirit. In designing my own home, it’s most important to me that it has a welcoming and comfortable vibe, and that it reflects who I am, what my life is about. If I accomplish that, I’ve succeeded.
How do you approach designing a space?
Of course the obvious: scale, color palette, cost … what are we trying to accomplish? When I’m making a purchase, I also seriously consider three things: Does it have a purpose? Is it comfortable? And I have to love it.
