Haeley Giambalvo of DesignImprovised.com balances a living room and play room space through stylish storage and living room furniture that keeps the kid stuff in one designated spot.
If you have young children, it is likely that your family room often does double duty as a playroom. As a parent, it can be tough to know what to do with the toys at the end of the day in order to reclaim any sort of adult space. Thanks to a few storage solutions from Hayneedle, we’ve been able to carve out a special area for our daughters, Stella (4) and Hazel (2), in our family room that allows them to play freely and helps us easily corral the toys at the end of the day.
Here are a few tips to help you create your own family room spot where your kids can have fun and you’ll be happy to see:
Designate a play space in one area of the family room. Not only does it make the kids feel like they have a special spot to play, but it keeps toys from spreading to all four corners of the room! A couple key furniture pieces, a rug, and some fun wall art make up our kids’ corner.
The play table is often the center of activity for our girls. They use it daily to eat breakfast, color, and play games. This Classic Playtime Activity Table is perfect given its long size, cubbies for storing coloring books, and a fun paper roll. I paired the vanilla table with a set of pumpkin orange KidKraft Avalon Chairs. The chairs come in a variety of fun colors to complement your family room décor.
Toy storage doesn’t have to be plastic and in primary colors! I love the sleek look of the modular Nexera Liber-T Cube Bookcase, which blends nicely with our other family room furnishings. Its mix of configurations, cabinets, and open shelves can accommodate a variety of toys.
When framed in a sophisticated grouping, your kids’ latest creations can make for extra special wall art. I created a gallery style grouping by framing some of my daughters’ art in simple black and white frames and incorporating some family photos.
Easy-to-wipe surfaces and indoor / outdoor fabrics are a great choice for a kids’ space. The Loloi Indoor / Outdoor rug under the table is kid-friendly and easy to clean.
Baskets with handles like this Colonial Mills storage basket are perfect for rounding up toys and moving them from room to room. Our girls love to play dress-up so we have a basket dedicated to some of their dress-up clothes in the family room.
A few simple changes like a bright set of pillows or a new pair of lamps and end tables can breathe new life into your family room and make it a place you look forward to spending time snuggling up on the couch at the end of a long day.
