Too much? Never. At least when it comes to maximalist furniture and home décor. This playful, loud, all-or-nothing style takes something good and makes it great – over and over again.

But before you dive head first into maximalism, remember: Anything goes as long as it’s composed. We’ve gathered some simple guidelines to keep in mind so you can achieve this busy-body style in a way that makes perfect sense.
Focus on Color
One thing that always makes an impression in this décor style is color. Maximalists love to add color wherever they can – from ceilings and walls all the way down to throw pillows and decorative vases. Colors are vibrant and bold, but don’t mistake this for dark colors only. Pastels, for example, can make an impact too.

Tip: Follow a color story. A smart color scheme can make patterned furniture look like it belongs together and bring unity to a room. Pick up paint chips at your local hardware store to explore the possibilities of color compositions. (We recommend using multiple shades of the same color.)
Mix Patterns & Prints
Maximalists love to layer bold patterns and prints – the bigger the surface, the better. If you prefer to start small, however, try wallpaper in a hallway or find an eye-catching accent chair. You might be surprised by how inspired you are from there!

Tip: Mix pattern and print sizes. A mixture of bold and delicate prints will help create definition in your space. If you feature a large pattern in the background, focus on small details in the foreground, and vice versa.
Display Artwork & Trinkets
If you are a collector of oddities, you’ll love maxmimalism because no detail is too small. The trick to making it all work? The items you display in every room should tell a story about you (your personality, hobbies, or travels, for example). Have fun and don’t overthink it!

Tip: Feature gallery walls. Don’t underestimate the impact of gallery walls – everywhere. They’re a fun way to display artwork and other items you’ve collected over time.
Make a Statement
If you love maximalism but you’re not sure where to begin, start with a statement piece you absolutely love. Make sure it’s bold and says something about your personality or interests. When you start with a focal point, it’s easier to build out your color scheme or story.

Tip: Go back in time. Maximalist style has a tendency to take us through different eras in time, so let time periods influence your choices. Victorian décor, for example, often features elaborately detailed motifs that mix well with modern styles.
