We don’t need to tell you meditation is good for your body, mind, and spirit. But just because it’s a buzzword and has a gazillion apps, meditation isn’t the easiest daily habit to form and maintain. That’s where nature comes in – and outdoor meditation. We’re here to help you help yourself by creating a peaceful space outside in which you’ll love to just sit and chill for a while. That’s all there really is to meditation. So let’s get started …
First, give some thought to where you can go for your dedicated alone time. You might delineate your garden meditation area with a garden trellis or outdoor panel simply to suggest a special place for contemplation.
Give yourself seating options – a variety of big outdoor pillows and cushions plus an outdoor bench create a feeling of comfort. Whether you sit lotus on the floor or sit on a bench, it doesn’t matter; what matters is that you’re comfortable and present. That said, you’d be surprised how your body will adapt to a half-lotus position and other ways of sitting, simply with consistent daily practice. Your foot won’t always fall asleep. Promise.
Mix patterns within a similar color palette and you’ll love the result. We’re crushing on new mudcloth patterns in neutrals – super peaceful.
If you’re more comfortable sitting on an outdoor bench or other outdoor seating, great! The discipline of daily meditation is far less about posture than it is about just doing it – and a peaceful, comfortable space can be created in many, many ways.
Not all of us have koi ponds on premise, but you can still incorporate the soothing element of water in nearly any space. Outdoor fountains come in all sizes and styles, and many require no pump or hose. Low maintenance and low sound are key when you’re shopping for a fountain.
Let’s steer clear of harsh motion or flood lights in your garden meditation space. Think outdoor lanterns or string lights – and solar ones are great options. If your outdoor contemplative spot doesn’t include walls or railings, you can hang lanterns on metal shepherd’s hooks in the ground to create a gentle glow.
Alternately, keep in mind the position of the sun during your regular meditation time. Having a patio umbrella or outdoor curtains can ensure comfort outdoors.
Amazing what some pebbles will do for an outdoor meditation garden. Stepping stones and sections of your space covered in sand or river rocks create a sense of order and calmness. And if you do go with sand, you could easily rake it in uniform designs … peaceful and comforting both to create and to enjoy.
After all, the best aspect and result of meditation is enjoyment – of this moment, and this moment, and eventually all the moments …
