Popular media company theSkimm makes it easier to live smarter. Hayneedle makes it easier to create the home of your dreams. We were one of a few select brands to help make over theSkimm’s New York City office space to reflect the style and ease of the brand. The goal of theSkimm’s new space was to create a comfortable, at-home vibe. Read on to see how to get your work space to feel more like home.
The new office is full of bursts of color – mainly their trademark teal – and on-trend, livable pieces. What you’ll definitely not find is a traditional 9 to 5 office vibe. The open floor plan and loft-style vibe gives off a relaxed vibe that feels like being in the comfort of your home.
“Our headquarters’ aesthetic is simple, bright, and comfortable,” Carly Zakin, co-founder of theSkimm said. “We focused on finding pieces that were evocative of the brand and pieces we’d feel comfortable putting in our own homes.”
Fellow co-founder Danielle Weisberg added, “We were careful in selecting furniture that never felt too ‘corporate’ – all of our conference rooms have couches and coffee tables instead of tables and chairs.”
Having a comfortable work space can increase your productivity, inspiration, and just make you happier while working. And as theSkimm demonstrates, you definitely don’t have to get furniture and décor from the “office” section. For instance, if office chairs aren’t calling out to you, try an accent chair or even a dining chair that can be functional and fun at your desk. Hayneedle’s exclusive dining tables were used as desks in a few different rooms.
And don’t forget the little things! Just like at home, the décor and finishing touches really make the look. Try some decorative pillows for added comfort and modular bookcases instead of traditional file cabinets. Skip the dreaded fluorescent lights and go for trendy floor lamps and lighting fixtures.
Most importantly, never forget your personal style when creating your office space. The Company is all about their wine and books, so you’ll find those themes throughout the space.
“Books, wine, and couches are all key pieces of our brand and culture,” Zakin said. “We wanted to make sure all of them were appropriately represented in the design.”
