While theSkimm makes it easier to live smarter, Hayneedle makes it easier to live stylishly. Naturally, theSkimm went to Hayneedle to be one of its partners when it came time to design their brand new office space in New York City’s Flatiron District.
“We knew from the start that we wanted to work with brands that specialize in home décor instead of traditional office furniture,” Danielle Weisberg, co-founder of theSkimm said. “Hayneedle has been a great partner for us in the past, and the selection and quick delivery made it an easy decision for us.”
The new office space is very open and industrial, which Weisberg said had “incredible bones” with the perfect lighting. Instead of changing the space, they worked with the raw, open layout and gave it a personalized, homey vibe central to their brand.
“The entire design process came together in just a few weeks. Our aesthetic is simple, bright, and comfortable,” Weisberg explained. “The product selection process was really about finding those pieces that were evocative of the brand. It was important to everyone in the space that you could walk in and instantly know you were at theSkimm.”
Because theSkimm was created in a living room by two friends, on a couch, couches are something you’ll see a lot of in the office.
“The challenge for us was converting the huge space into something that felt familiar and inviting – like the living room where theSkimm started,” fellow co-founder of theSkimm Carly Zakin said.
Having a space that felt like home, maximized the space, and was still functional was a huge design goal.
“This has been an interesting line for us to walk in the design process. It’s easy to say we want couches in every room and we want it to feel like a living room, but we had to balance that with the realities of a business at scale,” Zakin said. “A great example is our boardroom – it took a few tries to get the space to be both functional for meetings and still make it feel on brand. We made concessions on including the formal table and office chairs, but added accents like a bar, benches, throw pillows, and framed photos of the team’s biggest moments.”
The culture of the brand comes through in ways other than the furniture and décor as well; the conference rooms at the new HQ are named after a favorite TV show.
“All of our conference rooms are named after Law and Order: SVU characters: Benson, Stabler, and Munch were names we carried over from our last office but with so many conference rooms in the space, we had to get creative,” Zakin said. “We have two main conference rooms – Booking and Evidence – that were a big design focus for us. Booking is lined with bookshelves and Evidence is lined with wine racks – get it?”
The look emphasizes treating your office as you would your home, which is why all the pieces selected had to pass the “Would I have this in my home?” test. The design features mixed styles, fun colors and patterns, and personality. It also meant using pieces that weren’t necessarily categorized as “home office.” They utilized dining tables as desks, accent chairs, dining chairs, coffee and end tables as functional work pieces that never felt too corporate. Balance subdued hues with pops of color and bold, unexpected elements (like those amazing wine racks).
